The next sections in this lesson will address designing an OU infrastructure to support this type of design. Using OUs and GPOs is the way to secure Windows clients that are members of a Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 domain. However, some workstations might not be joined in a Windows domain. Securing these clients will require other techniques. Techniques for securing stand-alone Windows clients are addressed in Lessons 2 and 3, which present the design details for securing com puters and clients, respectively.

The policies in the Local Policies security area pertain to the security settings on the computer used by an application or user in the site, domain, or OU to which the GPO is linked. Local policies are based on the computer you are logged on to and the rights you have on that particular computer. This security area contains attributes for the fol lowing:

Audit policy Determines which security events are logged into the security log on the computer (successful attempts, failed attempts, or both). The security log is a part of the Event Viewer console. Audit policy is discussed in detail in Lesson 3. User rights assignment Determines which users or groups have logon or task privileges on the computer in a site, domain, or OU. A user right is authorization to perform an operation that affects an entire computer rather than a specific object on the computer. To ease the task of user account administration, you should assign user rights primarily to group accounts, rather than to individual user accounts. You can find details about user rights in Appendix C, User Rights. Security options Enables or disables security settings for the computer, such as digital signing of data, Administrator and Guest account names, floppy drive and CD-ROM access, driver installation, and logon prompts.

The real and perceived cost of security has always been a key factor in the poor implementation of security. Security-specific products, such as firewalls and intru sion detection systems (IDS), appear to cost a lot of money and do not produce results that non-technical people can easily understand.

Local policies, by definition, are local to a computer. When these settings are imported to a GPO in Active Directory, they affect the local security settings of any computer accounts to which that GPO is applied.

The Event Log security area defines attributes related to the application, security, and system logs in the Event Viewer console for computers in a site, domain, or OU. The attributes are: maximum log size, access rights for each log, and retention settings and methods. Event log size and log wrapping should be defined to match your business and security requirements.

Note You can also configure the default security log size in the Security Properties dialog box. The Security Properties dialog box is located by right-clicking Security and then clicking Properties in the Event Viewer console.

The average cost of security-specific products can range from a few dollars to tens of thousands of dollars per product. They can require training for staff and are complicated to explain to the layman. What s more, the data that security prod ucts produce is often difficult to explain to end users and management. What, for example, does it mean to the average employee that there is evidence of hun dreds of blocked packets in the firewall logs or that a large number of alarms are generated by the IDS Other examples of identifiable costs attributed to security include the downtime experienced because users forget passwords and the reduced or perceived reduc tion in performance when auditing is turned on or when data is encrypted. But the largest inhibiting factor, by far, has been the perception that security is over head something that brings no direct improvement to the bottom line and something that is expendable when the company is economically stressed.

The Restricted Groups security area provides an important security feature that acts as a governor for group membership. For example, you can create a Restricted Groups policy to control membership in the Administrators group. In Restricted Groups, you
